The Oxford Shirt

You may be asking yourself, “What is an Oxford Shirt?” – Easily one of the best shirts for men, the humble Oxford shirt is a time-honored wardrobe essential that every man should own. The ultimate shirt for both casual and formal looks, and with a wide variety of colors and fabrics, you’ll always be able to find an oxford shirt to suit your style.….here’s everything you’ll ever need to know about this classic and iconic shirt fabric.

The cloth used for a men's oxford shirt traces all the way back to Great Britain. During the 19th century, it was a Scottish fabric mill that started using cotton to make the oxford cloth. The mill made four different and distinct shirt fabrics and named them after the most famous universities of the time, Oxford, Yale, Harvard, and Cambridge. The fabric named after Oxford University proved to be the most popular and is still widely used today.

The Oxford fabric has some unique features. Two fine yarns are taken and woven against a yarn that is heavier to make this fabric. In many cases, the heavier yarn that is used is a different color than the finer yarns. It is the contrast in color that provides the unique pattern of the oxford cloth.

You may find it interesting that men's oxford shirts were worn originally worn by polo players. They liked the shirt because the fabric held-up to the often rough sport, and the fact that the collars were buttoned-down prevented them from flapping up and obstructing their vision. it wasn't until the polo shirt was introduced by tennis player Rene Lacoste in the 1930s that polo players stopped wearing shirts made from the oxford fabric.

There are three different types of oxford cloth available. There is the standard Oxford cloth, the Pinpoint Oxford cloth and the Royal Oxford cloth. The difference between the fabrics is not in the weave, as they are all woven in the same manner, but in the thickness and weight of the yarns that are used. Pinpoint oxford cloth generally has a higher thread count, and a lighter, finer weave than the standard Oxford Cloth. The Royal Oxford is a step above the Pinpoint with an even higher thread count, giving the fabric a distinctive, significant texture. Pinpoint Oxford works best with a button-down collar and dressed up with a tie and blazer, or with no tie and some crisp dark denim. Royal Oxford Fabric is well known for its soft hand feel and because it is such a fancy looking fabric, it works best with spread collar dress shirts. Pair a nice Royal Oxford dress shirt with a dark navy suit and you’ll look extra dapper.
